Way2Go – enabling active choices in Nelson/Tasman: Way2Go began
Way2Go began…
Way2Go came about through public consultations during the development of the Nelson Tasman Physical Activity Plan, and as a result of SPARC’s Obstacles to Action (2004) report. Way2go is also aligned with the objectives of Push Play (a key Way2Go message). For more information on the Push Play campaign visit www.sparc.org.nz/pushplay/overview/push-play-06

One of the learnings in the Physical Activity Plan consultation was that many communities were keen to receive support and information about opportunities for physical activity in their area. The project team were surprised that some communities knew little about local opportunities. For example, in rural communities, many people felt that walking or cycling was not an option for them because they involved using the main road, which they see as unsafe and unappealing. Many of these people, who take their car to town or the shops, weren’t aware of local walking and cycle tracks they could use to get to town.
Another learning from the consultation was that people of different ages thought that informal events, such as a game of cricket in the local park with residents, had become less common. They were keen to see this type of event revived so they could take part.
