Project sparks swimming boom in Thames Valley District - Key initiatives
Key initiatives
- In 2007 Steve Hay was appointed as the new coach at Thames Swimming Club. He has now become the unofficial coaching mentor for the Thames Valley.
- The first SportsForce Development Squad has been then formed. Twenty swimmers, including at least one from each club, now come together monthly, under the guidance of Hay.
- Coaches are up-skilling through attendance at SportsForce organised technique clinics and camps. This has also given them the confidence to pursue higher level SNZ qualifications. Parents are training as time keepers.
- Two annual swim camps have been held at Whangamata for all clubs, targeted at swimmers and potential coaches. Swimmers enjoy the friendships that they make with swimmers from other clubs. Clubs shared a bus to Rovers Chocolate Carnival as part of the 2007 Swim Camp.
- There are monthly stroke clinics. Swimmers and coaches from all six clubs attend.
- This year Thames Swimming Club gave all the clubs the opportunity to train with them at their heated pool during the Winter season. A number of swimmers from Mercury Bay, Ngatea, Paeroa, Whangamata and Coromadel have taken up this opportunity.
