Grovetown School - Project Pedal Power Model: Wider implications: The perspective from Bike NZ
The perspective from Bike NZ
Bike NZ Cycling Development Manager John Willmer is excited about Grovetown’s experience and is very keen to see similar initiatives in other schools.
“It’s a great example of how the enjoyment and freedom of cycling can deliver benefits for a range of issues. Whether it’s health and fitness, sustainable transport or supporting the learning and personal development of children, cycling is such a simple solution.”
“Cycling is one of the most popular activities for both boys and girls, and schools typically have a sports field that could accommodate a perimeter cycle track,” John says.
“We’re working with Greg to produce a Do-It-Yourself guide to assist other schools to build their own tracks,” he says. “It’s a great model, schools and local cycle enthusiasts working together. We have an extensive nationwide club network experienced at building tracks. They are very keen to get behind community initiatives that get children on bikes.”
John is also encouraged by the increase in children biking to school. “When we go out to youngsters and ask them how they want to get to school they will always say the want to cycle,” he says.
The barrier, and often justifiably, comes from parents who say it is too dangerous.
“This community has looked at how it can be made safe, got buy-in from parents and reaped the results,” he says.
The wider cycling community is also seeing benefits. Children are now seeking additional cycling experiences. To support the growing interest, locals are now organising skills training and trying to get support to build a bmx track.
Wilmer is keen to highlight that this initiative delivers against a number of the government’s physical activity, health and active transport policy goals. “I’m hoping we can also support similar initiatives in other schools, by encouraging government agencies to recognise the benefits and invest accordingly.”
