Active Communities Investment Project shines in first year in Upper Hutt - Key partnerships

Key partnerships
Youthtown

Upper Hutt City Council uses Youthtown to access and support children and young people. Youthtown has more of a provision focus and has enabled key gaps in children and young people’s services to be addressed. As a result, the city has a number of recreation programmes (after school and holidays) that are linked to Activation. The Youthtown funding has been critical to support the stream of work that schools were responsible for in the original Upper Hutt Active Recreation Plan. This has been achieved through the creation of the Schools Activator position.

Youthtown has enabled the running of youth-centric events, such as a streetball competition. Again, this had been highlighted as a need by young people themselves.

Youthtown will also run the Urban Unity youth leadership programme in Upper Hutt. This programme has been running in Auckland for the past two years and provides leadership skills to young people. In turn, these young leaders are supported to run events and activities for other young people in the city.

Territorial authorities

Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington partner for many programmes including walking and cycling events which have attracted over 2,500 people. The longest running and extremely successful “interactive walk”, featuring ‘Kev the Wandering Kiwi’ continues to grow every year. Activation, Wellington City Council and H20 Xtream partnered to deliver the ZM Women’s run/swim series in Upper Hutt, which saw 85 women take part.

Schools

Activation has partnered with several schools to assist run events, provide breakfast and nutritional information. Teachers have also been supported with SPARC’s KiwiDex physical activity sessions.

Sport Wellington

Contributes to funding and assists many Activation programmes.

YMCA

Supports and assists with many activities
