Exercise on Prescription – Transforming lives through supported programmes of physical activity

The Exercise on Prescription (EoP) programme encourages people with health problems to take-up physical activity and make sustainable lifestyle changes for their wellbeing.  It has been described as an inspirational, life-changing programme. The model is simple, and has the potential to be replicated around the country.

EoP provides a 10-week, structured programme of one-on-one motivational support, which champions changes in health and wellbeing behaviour.  People enter the programme by referral from their GP or practice nurse through SPARC’s Green Prescription (GRx) health initiative.  In contrast to GRx, i.e.phone support, EoP offers a more supported programme, including lifestyle coaching, access to specific exercise programmes and information about nutrition.  These elements enable people at risk of serious health problems, or already with serious health problems, to make exercise and physical activity part of their lifestyle.

EoP was launched in Taupo and Turangi in February 2005, and was delivered by the Taupo District Council until the end of 2007.  Since then, it has been incorporated into Sport Waikato’s Active and Well programme, which offers a broader selection of activity options and links with many other recreation facilities and clubs.
