Improved communication helps Bay of Plenty sports clubs

Summary

Sports clubs in the Bay of Plenty are enjoying a much improved relationship with Tauranga City Council (TCC) thanks to a one stop council funded service at their local Regional Sports Trust.

This case study looks at the results achieved by the arrangement, which has seen a Sport Bay of Plenty Sports Development Coordinator working with clubs for the past three years. The agreement has just been renewed through to 2011.

The Coordinator has improved relations so much that the TCC six monthly Outdoor User Groups Forums held for local groups, have evolved from being difficult evenings highlighted by “anti-council grilling” to pleasant evenings that are informative and even fun.

Clubs are taking advantage of having an independent, well connected adviser who can take away the mysteries of council and connect them directly to the right channels, armed with the right approach.

Documents including feasibility studies seeking funding from the Council, prepared with the assistance of Sport Bay of Plenty, are now more detailed and prepared with an understanding of what the Council is looking for – for example demonstrated demand or need and multi use opportunities.

TCC and Sport BOP meet once a week and their relationship has gone from strength to strength.
