Growing Leaders

The sport and recreation environment can be a powerful place to learn about leadership.

Growing Leaders develops leader learning and leadership experiences for young people aged 9-18 years.

Growing Leaders is designed to:

  • grow our young people into leaders
  • encourage young people to pursue leadership roles in sport and recreation
  • give young people self-confidence and leadership tools for life.

Growing Leaders can be used to develop a broad range of leadership roles - for example physical activity leaders, prefects, peer leaders, coaches, managers, sports administrators, sport and recreation officials, outdoor recreation leaders and captains.

The Growing Leaders resource can be used in a huge range of settings – everything from physical education classes, school sport programmes, outdoor education trips, lunchtime and after school recreation activities, sport and recreation clubs to youth groups.

How does the resource work?

Growing Leaders consists of four stages of leader learning - Explore, Discover, Navigate and Empower.

Each of the stages in Growing Leaders includes activities which cover a set of themes and sub themes relating to leadership. These themes and sub themes include Leading Self, Connectedness, Contributing and Influencing, Understanding Others, Relating to and Communicating with Others, Planning to Lead and Leading in Action.

When a Participant successfully completes a stage of Growing Leaders they are awarded a certificate of completion.

The resource includes a Facilitator’s Guide, learning activities (with Facilitator’s notes) for each stage, a Leader ThinkTank document (which provides additional information about leadership for Facilitators), and completion certificates for each stage. A series of PowerPoint presentations on leadership have also been prepared for Facilitator’s to use.
